Good Evening,
We are going to talk about a rock’n roll stage show. Are you in a band, or a solo artist, or a musician in the making? Well, you all need to know how to perform your songs not just play them! Think of it this way, if I was a movie producer and all I did was put up a single camera and hit play, how long would you watch…? Not very long. So, it’s the same with a stage performance. What do movies do…? They focus your attention where they want you to look. Now, if you are a stage performer you want to do exactly that.
I need to take this from a rock ‘n roll band viewpoint, yet it works for any stage performer. O.K. I just spent a fortune on a ticket, What do I get? I love the music that’s why I bought the tickets. So, if you perform the music all the better for me…!
I don’t like bands doing the same moves some get away with it but it is not sincere. So I like a show where musicians are being themselves. At the same point I like it when they know how to perform their songs and not just play them. It is so much more fun as a fan to be entertained, and don’t get me wrong I am talking about sincere entertaining NOT phony entertaining and there is a difference. Always be honest and sincere, the audience knows the difference.
I am a drummer so I am stuck on my riser, so are keyboard players. You guitar players, bass players and singers have all the power. Use it! Yet if you are a band be entertaining and organized with your show. You make it or break it with your show. Take it from an old rocker(Thin Lizzy-I’m a Rocker). Now, the front line has the control so they need to use it properly. Walk, a stage is so big wherever you are, a club or a 20,000 seat arena. Take complete advantage of what you have, you must adjust…! Walking is the best show there is depending on how you do it!
Let me now explain the energy level. It is 1,2,3,4. 4 is the highest anyone can go, 3 is just under that but still high, 2 is medium and 1 is quiet. Great bands have this talent of dynamics. Bring it down and take it to the top….I mean TOP=4! Are you understanding this all? I hope so. 4 is Rock it out to the MAX! 1=bring it down, erry, soft…whatever, play the gamet…! 2 is usually verses of a song. Up down all the way around if you can get this I want to see your band!
Now, focus attention on what we talked about earlier. If the singer is singing the verse, all others should be watching him/her. When the lead comes up for the guitarist everyone should look at hin/her! Are you with me? Move attention around and you win! Give all on the stage attention and honor, you all deserve it! Gene Simmons once said to me on the “Lick it Up” tour, who cares what the Industry has to say, I care what the crowd says, he’s absolutely right! The people pay the ticket price, not the Industry, so entertain them! I gave you some secrets, figure out the rest if you really want it. This is a tough business, be tough! Listen, watch, and always entertain. Don’t just be a player, be an entertainer also! Rock ‘N Roll is a Blast, and Fun….Keep up the tradition…!
