About Teddy

musiclife.jpg

Teddy Mueller, originally from Milwaukee, WI. started playing drums at the age of eight, after watching his Dad take his drums from the closet every Fri. and Sat. “One day I pulled them out of the closet (while my Dad was at work) and set them up (not right) ha, ha, but Dad was cool and helped me do it right, after he had seen what I had done”.

My Dad was a very accomplished drummer. He played in his school band, played out alot until he quit when I was 7. He was much into the Big Band sound Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Cozy Cole, and Louis Bellson were his favorite drummers. I loved the British Invasion, Beatles, Stones, the Kinks, the Animals, and all of it. My first band was the Epilog, I was 13. We were lucky and got to open for the Skunks, Tony’s Tygers, the Destinations, and the Robbs. I also liked the Baroques, and the Messengers! All local favorites at the local CYO Dances at the time, 1967. At 14 I joined a band called Prism. We had a girl lead singer and did alot of different material including Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, and all kinds of Hippie stuff. I then heard the blues- Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf and Paul Butterfield, Sonny Boy Williamson, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker Max Roach…! I was so intrigued, so I practiced the blues feel. A guitarist named Jeff Dagenhardt showed me how to fine tune, the feel. In Blues, the feel is more important than the chops, of course you must have enough chops to accomplish the feel. I loved the Harmonica and wanted a straight Blues band. At 16 years old I joined the best blues band in Milwaukee called “Short Stuff for a year.” Like everyone else at that time I got into Cream, and Hendrix, thanks to Benadetta Balistrieri…Blind Faith, Jeff Beck, and Led Zeppelin, who were doing heavy blues, which became my favorite music. A group called Tongue, with Paul Rabbitt, Mickey Larson, and Rick Clark were looking for a drummer. They were Blues but much heavier, along with doing almost all original music. “I was the 55th drummer to audition and got the gig”. I joined Tongue. “We had a limo and a truck. I was only 17 years old, and still in high school!” Tongue traveled the Midwest, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, and California yearly. “We played the Starwood in Hollywood alot, It was great fun”! I met Bobby Barth while in Tongue in Denver in 1972, and Wolfgang who turned into Autograph, later. Bobby always wanted me in his band, Babyface. I always loved his guitar playing and especially his writing, but it took another 4 years to happen. Then a falling out with Paul Rabbitt and Mickey Larson led to Mickey leaving Tongue and joining Babyface with Bobby. Mickey was a big part of the band and it was never the same. Although Joey LaVie did a good job of replacing Mickey. I left, for hollywood. Back in ‘72 is when I met my Dearest friends Danny Johnson, Jay Davis, David, Hugh Horn, and Buddy. They were a group called Axis from Shreveport Louisiana, Vinny Appice joined Axis a little later. I then moved to Hollywood California. Hanging out on the Sunset strip and the Starwood (which Tongue played at at least 6 times), the Rainbow, the Roxy, Rodney Bingenhiemer’s club, with my friends Hernando Courtright (who introduced me to the Runaway’s, Kim Fowley, Danny Wilde, Randy Rhoads, we went to the valley and saw Quiet Riot practice, I remember Randy and Kevin, yet don’t know who the others were. This was 1975, before Rudy and Frankie. Hernando was a blast) the Runaway’s, Phil Lynotte/thin lizzy came to a Runaway’s showcase, and Rodney Binginheimer, and Paul Taylor, and Ritchie Blackmore, (Ronnie who was singing with Ritchie’s new band “Rainbow”), Cozy Powell, Carmine Appice, my Dear friends Jon Hyde and Bobby Pickett, and Michael Monarch of Detective (who were signed to Zeppelin’s Swan Song Label by Jimmy Page), my Dear Friends Glenn Hyde-detective’s road mgr. & Renee who I lived with, Lynda Hyde, Steve Marriott and Jerry Shirley of Humble Pie, we’re all hanging at the Rainbow on Sunset and with Zeppelin who were rehearsing the “Presence” album at SIR, next to Detective, for a month ‘75. Seeing Led Zeppelin rehearse was a highlight of my life. Wild days!!!! Candy Store Rock*…go achille’s…a cup of tea, or for your life….

I went back to Milwaukee and was hired on for an 18 week tour of Canada with Teen Angel. We played 2 weeks at the Moustache Club in Montreal, where a beautiful French girl gave me the clap! hahaha…then to Toronto where we played 2 weeks, and I hurting as a went…You Know!hahaha, then nothing!!! The singer owed the Booking agent $. We ended up paying his bill… :o (   So, I’m stranded in Toronto. So I called my friends Danny Johnson and Jay Davis. They were in NY at the time. They said fly to NY and Jay said I can stay at his apt. in the Village. Independence Plaza I think it was. Jay was in Woodstock playing with Mick Ronson then and Danny was in Rick Derringer’s new band called Derringer. Jay called me and said Mick wants to do a 2 drummer thing and Jay suggested me. So, I took a bus to Woodstock and stayed with Mick Ronson, his dear wife Sue(I’m still missing your curry, Sue), Jay Davis, and Bobby the other drummer, at Albert Grossman’s home in Woodstock, hanging with Mick Ronson, thanks to Jay Davis. We played and alot of pool too. The group never materialized. Mick rejoined Ian Hunter. Mick passed in 1993. In the short time I knew him and Sue, they were the most wonderful, gracious, loving, people I have ever met…!!! Rest in peace, Mick. I’m sure God is enjoying your wonderful Spirit and taking good care of you!!!…much missed! So back to Manhatten, to Jay and Diane’s. Danny was next door with his family, wife Cheryl and their kids Celeste and Chad, Along with Jay’s wife-Diane who’s Danny’s sister. I met Eileen and fell in love with her. Manhattan was classc then. CBGB’s in the bowery, we hung with the Ramones, the New York Dolls, Blondie. Eileen, Liz & Bebe hung with Jerry Hall. Derringer was readying themselves for the Back in the Saddle tour, with Aerosmith. Ashley’s was extreme fun! Liz Derringer and Bebe basically ran the place. It was all Rock ‘N Roll at the time, decadent and irreverent! Later, Jay Davis landed a gig with Rod Stewart’s band, and he co-wote “baby jane” with Rod…! Go Jay, Danny later joined Alcatraz and then Steppenwolf. In NY at that time, Aerosmith and Derringer at the Garden. I went back to milwaukee in 3/77. I saw them a bit later in Chicago at the World Series of Rock at Cominsky Stadium. It was Aerosmith, Jeff Beck, and Derringer…! What a great show that was. While Jeff Beck was playing, the entire stadium filled with smoke. People were freaking out, jumping of steps 10 ft high, mayhem. Jeff Beck kept playing and all of a sudden the smoke cleared. They made an announement someone through firecrackers in a gabadge can, alot of smoke firecrackers…! The show continued. Great memories…! :o )

I went back to Milwaukee, I saw Detective open for Kiss in Madison at the Dane County Coliseum. I forget which tour. Great party though at the Edgewater in Madison. Kiss off, the next night Detective was to play with AC-DC with Bon at the Electric Ballroom in Milwaukee. They didn’t get to play…power problems, back with Kiss. Then Bobby called me from Denver and said Blackfoot’s (manager at the time) is managing him invited me to join his new band Axe. He told me he’d send me the cash to meet everyone in Gainesville, Florida. So Edgar Riley Jr. Axe’s Keyboard player is from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, ( very accomplished, after Michaels death Edgar was offered a place in Frank Zappas band) anyway, we packed up the limo and headed to Florida. The rest is history… we rehearsed 6 months, a tornado destroyed our rehearsal hall, and equipment. We shared a warehouse with Blackfoot, luckily they were on the road when it happened. We picked ourselves up and signed a deal with MCA shortly after that, then Atco/Atlantic Records. We lived in a tour bus for years touring as special guest with Ozzy, Kiss, ZZ Top, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Humble Pie, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Queensryche, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, Def Lepard, Ted Nugent, Motley Crue, Scorpions and many more, while also headlining our own shows.

After writing material for a new album, no-one seemed to like! We had bad management. And not Arnakkatta, Nalli managment was the monster. You’ve all seen Behind the Music! We were managed by Arnakatta, Judas Priest’s management in 1981, until Jim Dawson was checked into a london hospital for cocaine addiction. I miss Dickie Bell and all the Priest boyz, they really took us under their wing. So, Everyone went on a home. Unfortunately, Bobby and Michael were in a serious car accident that killed Michael Osborne. We were all absolutely devastated and decided not to continue without Michael!!

“I was in Milwaukee when it happened, and it devastated me”! Ken Adamany, Cheap Trick’s manager at the time offered me a position with one of his new bands- (“Bad Boy”), so I auditioned and joined them, for a year touring the Electric Eyes album. I was moving to London, at least that was the plan. After my contract was up I started a version of a group called “Moxy Roxx”, and then “the Machine”. Nalli stole my musicians, I quit playing & the music industry! I flew to nyc and interviewed with Don Grierson at Capital Records for an A&R position. It was down to 2. I lost, Frankie LaRoca got the gig. I understood, Frankie already knew everyone in nyc. I went to work for the Musicland Group opening Suncoast Motion Picture Co. stores. They were movie for sale stores. I opened 2 in Milwaukee and they transferred me to NY where I met my dear friend Billy Mira. Hernando had moved to NY to from LA. I opened up Bangor, Maine, Boston. Well all Mass, Ny, New Jersey, Conn. Philly, DC, then they transferred me back to L.A. I opened almost all the LA stores Santa Monica 3rd St. Promenode, Sherman Oaks, whatever, I was based in the Northridge Mall store. John Sykes used to come in alot. Then I got into producing, working with Bobby Barth again, Michael Slamer, Richard McKugh, Danny Johnson (Derringer, Rod Stewart, Eddie Van Halen Produced two of Danny’s CD’s), and working on movies, publishing, and A&R at SDM, Peer Music & then Warren Entner Mgmt. After the riots, fires, mudslides and the ’94 earthquake. “The earthquake took my home in Woodland Hills, and lost everything I had worked my whole life for, no earthquake insurance-dummy me. I went back east.

“A couple of years after the earthquake, and after Bobby’s time in Australia with Rose Tattoo, Bobby called me and said MTM Records in Europe an Zero Records in Japan wanted us to do more albums, so I went to Denver and we did it with Edgar, Bob Harris and Blake. It was great fun! “. We did Axe 5, and 20 Years from Home Vol. 1&2. N.E.H. and Fore Real Entertainment released it them the USA.

“My father became very ill and I went back to Milwaukee to spend time with him”. He died a year later…”Rest in peace Dad.” At the same time losing two other very special people in my life Marna Berry who I was engaged to at one time, and Ruby Starr, loved her too! She was sooo much fun. Rest in Peace both of you…!

Then I opened and managed a Mars the Musician’s Planet Mega store in Baltimore. I also worked at the Educational Media Group, selling radio time on teenage drinking and driving, breast cancer awareness, & many great causes through each year. While working w/danny johnson and his cloud 9 cd. i was in nashville and witnessed 9/11-12-13-14/01 They do wonderful work!!! God bless you Cheryl & Danny! I continue in Business today, Consulting, Training, Event Planning, Management, and Store Operations. I love business, team players and talent! All Great things come from a Team of People! Teamwork makes Dreams Work…Living clean and sober, listening to my Higher Power…!

I continue my love of Music, playing Drums-only a bit, looking for new talent, working on producing, artist development, A&R and film. I am still a voting Grammy member which keeps me young…haha. And, No, I didn’t vote for Jethro Tull as Best Heavy Metal Band. I voted for Metallica. Loving life clean & sober!

Rock-n-Roll forever…Wishing you hope, health, happiness, joy, and a sincere heart! I keep loving smiles, hugs, kisses, hand-shakes, high fives, & Love. “Remember, Life is short…enjoy the journey”!

Thanks to all the Fans, Family, and Friends through the years, this is for you!!

I Love You All,

Teddy :o )
